Mayhew Tools to be Primary Sponsor for Whelen Modified Tour Car in 2017

Turners Falls, MA– Mayhew Steel Products is excited to announce we are teaming up with Mike Smergilio from MSIII Racing and 4 time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Doug Coby as primary sponsor of the # 2 car for the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Modifed Tour.   Doug Coby made the announcement during his champion’s speech at Night of Champions Touring Award Banquet on December 10, 2016 in Charlotte, NC at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

“We are obviously really excited to bring Mayhew into our team as we try to chase four championships in a row,” Doug Coby, of Milford, CT said.  “We feel like we have a great brand to pair up with their great brand.  They are an industry leader in their field and they feel like we are an industry leader in our field, so it was a natural fit for the two of us to come together.”

This year, Coby became the first driver since the inception of the Whelen Modified Tour in 1985 win three consecutive championship titles. He won his first championship in 2012 driving for team owner Wayne Darling. He was second in the standings to Ryan Preece in 2013 before winning the last three titles with the Mike Smeriglio owned MSIII Racing Team led by Crew Chief Phil Moran.

“We’re really excited to win some races with Mayhew’s logo on our car and really get them more involved in the automotive side of their business,” Coby said. “They do industrial products and automotive products and they’ve made it pretty clear that they would like to get some more traction among the automotive consumers and the race fans and race team members. It’s a great fit for everybody involved and we’re really excited to move.”

Mayhew Steel Products had served as an associate sponsor the Bob Garbarino owned Mystic Missile NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour team for the 2016 season and was looking to expand its racing sponsorship program.  Mayhew President John Lawless was happy when the opportunity was presented to step up as primary sponsor with a championship team.  “We’re very excited to begin our relationship with MSIII Racing,” says Lawless. “This partnership will help us reach the NASCAR and racing fan base, whose demographics match those of our target customers.”  Mayhew has a great line of specialty automotive tools that fit in well in the racing world and looks forward to getting our brand out there in a big way.

Mayhew, founded in 1856, is the oldest punch and chisel manufacturer in the United States. Over time our product line has grown but our passion for manufacturing quality hand tools here in the USA continues as we serve the Industrial, Automotive and Hardware industries. As we’ve grown from a small tool house to the industry leader, there’s only one thing that hasn’t changed—our dedication to quality, reliability, and craftsmanship. That’s why we’ve become the tool of choice for certified technicians and professional mechanics across the country, and have found a home in the tool boxes of do-it-yourselfers as well.
