DOUG COBY: Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion

Doug Coby competes in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, driving the No. 10 ‘Mayhew Tools’ Chevrolet for Doug Coby Racing. He is a six-time champion of the Tour, winning titles in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. He is the only driver to win four straight championships and in 2016, Coby won nine pole awards, coming just one short of a record set by Steve Park.

Coby made his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut in 2002 with three starts that season. In 2003, he finished 14th in points after making 15 starts, jumped to 12th in the standings in 2004, and in 2005 he had six top-five finishes and was seventh in the final standings.

Coby captured the prestigious Sprint Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway for his first Whelen Modified Tour event win in 2006. He made 11 starts over the 2007 and 2008 seasons. In 2009, Coby finished 11th in the standings after starting 11 events. He ran for five different teams in 2010, finishing in the top-10 four of eight starts that year. Coby put together a deal to drive half of the 2011 season for car owner Wayne Darling and half for George Bierce and finished fifth in the standings, then a career best.

Driving exclusively for Wayne Darling in the 2012 season Coby won his first career Whelen Modified Tour championship. He finished the season with a series high of five victories over 14 events and 11 top-10 runs. At one point during the season, he recorded seven consecutive top-three finishes. He finished the season with a series best average finish of 5.9. In 2013, despite only starting 13 of 14 events, he finished second in the Whelen Modified Tour standings.

Following the 2013 season, Coby announced his intent to join the Mike Smeriglio Racing team in 2014.  Thanks to a tour best 12 top-10 finishes in 13 outings and winning the 125 at Stafford Motor Speedway, Coby drove to his second Whelen Modified Tour championship in three years, giving team owner Mike Smeriglio his first title.

In 2015, Doug became just the third driver in Whelen Modified Tour history to earn three or more championships. He set career highs for wins (7), poles (6), top fives (11) and laps led (830), Doug became just the third driver to record a season sweep at Thompson; earned his first career bullring victory at Monadnock and became the first driver in tour history to win the last three races of a season, and the first to win three-consecutive races from the pole.

Doug won his fourth career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship in 2016 and nine NWMT pole awards. In the process he joined NASCAR Hall of Famers Jerry Cook and Richie Evans, as well as NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Mike Stefanik and Tony Hirschman Jr., as the only drivers in NASCAR Modifieds 69-year history to win four or more championships. He also became the first driver in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour era, which began in 1985, to win four straight titles. Coby won five times in 2016 to move to seventh all-time on the tour’s win list.

Coby claimed his fourth consecutive (5th overall) championship in the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season, finished third in 2018, and in 2019 Coby went on to claim his sixth championship. Following the championship, Mike Smeriglio’s (Coby’s car owner) announcement to sell his team, prompted Coby to purchase one of Smerigilio’s three cars and start the Doug Coby Racing team in 2020.
