Meet Mayhew: Faces Behind the Forge
Dedication and Engineering Excellence
Every reliable tool starts with the dedicated hands that craft it. While we are known for producing rugged, high-quality products, our true strength at Mayhew Tools lies in the hardworking people behind the steel. We are proud to showcase the individuals who embody our rich heritage and company values.
Today we are excited to feature two remarkable team members who play vital roles at different stages of our process: Bob Kohlstrom, our Shipping Manager, and TJ Meyer, an Engineer. From the initial spark of innovation to the final shipment leaving our facility, their combined stories highlight the resilience, problem-solving, and craftsmanship that define our brand.
In this spotlight, we are excited to feature Bob Kohlstrom, our Shipping Manager. Bob brings an incredible story of resilience and dedication to our team. After an extensive career in the firearms industry, Bob faced a crossroads at age 62 when his manufacturing facility relocated. Discover more about Bob’s journey and insights in our Q&A below.
16 Years of Dedication: Bob Kohlstrom, Shipping Manager
Bob Kohlstrom brings an incredible story of resilience and loyalty to our team. Having celebrated over 16 years with Mayhew Tools, Bob faced a crossroads at age 62 when his previous manufacturing facility relocated. Rather than retiring, he embraced a new challenge with us. Discover more about Bob’s journey and insights below.
Can you walk us through your role and what a typical day looks like for you?
As I arrive, I check what has been produced overnight. I then review the open orders report to identify any new or existing orders that can be shipped. I meet with my team to schedule the day's shipments and other activities. I then attend any scheduled meetings and help organize shipments and orders.
How’d you get your start in this line of work, and what brought you through our doors?
I used to work for a firearms company. That company was bought out by Remington Firearms. They closed the Gardner facility and were moving everything to Ilion, NY. Although I was offered a job there, I was 62 years old and didn’t want to uproot my life. I was laid off but wasn’t ready for retirement so I came to work for Basque. I thought I would work for a few more years and then retire. Basque was then bought out by Mayhew and became Mayhew Basque. I stayed on for the challenge. And here I am over 16 years later.
Is there a project or accomplishment you’ve been part of here that you’re especially proud of?
I’m proud to have played a small role in helping the company achieve significant revenue growth over time. Being part of a team that contributed to that level of progress has been especially rewarding.
When someone picks up one of our tools, what do you want them to notice right away?
I believe that anyone who picks up a Mayhew tool notices that they have a quality American-made tool.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I used to be very involved in charities. I was the president and co-founder of Daily Bread, serving breakfast every Saturday to anyone hungry for no charge. But, as I get older, I have fewer outside activities. I still belong to a cribbage league, but spend more of my spare time relaxing and enjoying my children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.
Engineering Excellence: TJ Meyer, Engineer
While Bob ensures our finished tools reach the hands of hardworking professionals, engineers like TJ Meyer ensure those tools are built to perfection from the very start.
TJ has dedicated nearly eight years to Mayhew Tools. His drive for innovation and problem-solving continually advances our manufacturing processes. From supporting robotic cells to developing new product lines, TJ’s technical skill helps shape our most innovative tools.
Can you walk us through your role and what a typical day looks like for you?
My role is highly focused on problem-solving and continuous improvement. A typical day begins with work on capital projects and engineering designs, followed by responding to any production-related issues that arise. This often includes supporting robotic cells, laser machines and other manufacturing equipment across the floor.
I regularly work hands-on with machines alongside the maintenance staff to troubleshoot issues, diagnose root causes, and implement solutions or process improvements. I also collaborate closely with the NPD team by supporting product designs, print setup, and item and routing configurations.
Over time, I’ve developed a strong understanding of our equipment, processes, and what it takes to consistently manufacture high‑quality tools, which allows me to support production, maintenance, and engineering efforts efficiently and proactively.
How’d you get your start in this line of work, and what brought you through our doors?
I began my career through several internships in the construction industry, which gave me exposure to real-world engineering applications. After that, I worked as a telecommunications drafter, creating network schematics for Verizon. That role involved designing cable layouts and equipment installs used to deliver service across Massachusetts. Those early experiences helped build the technical foundation that ultimately led me here, where I was intrigued by the facility and role. The use of robotics and laser machines really piqued my interest, as I knew I’d like to learn about them and work on them if given the chance. It was quite fascinating to see all the machinery for the first time and the various processes by which these tools are made.
Is there a project or accomplishment you’ve been part of here that you’re especially proud of?
Two projects stand out as especially meaningful to me.
The first is the initiation and development of our hammerless tool line. The project began with a prototype design from an external designer, which we reverse-engineered into something we could consistently manufacture. From design refinement and collaboration with CNC to produce initial samples, to developing assembly methods, designing machines and tooling, and even contributing to the packaging, I was involved throughout the full lifecycle of the product line. Seeing the tool go from concept to production was extremely rewarding.
The second project is the redesign of the Robot 10 cell. The original robot had become outdated, with many obsolete components. The project involved installing a new robot and controller, revamping the cell layout and re-routing all I/O wiring. Plus, designing and integrating an in-house designed hydraulic press table for chisel clipping and for pry-bar bending. Once installed, the system required several days of reprogramming and re-teaching to ensure safe and precise operation before handing it to production.
I’d like to give special recognition to Sam Baker, as well as the maintenance team—their support was critical to the project’s success. While the project took longer than initially expected, the teamwork and coordination ensured it was completed correctly and effectively. This project was an invaluable learning experience.
When someone picks up one of our tools, what do you want them to notice right away?
I want them to immediately notice the craftsmanship and quality behind the tool. From CNC programming, to the dies, machines and skilled hands involved in forging, stamping, heat treatment and assembly, every tool begins with quality material that is carefully engineered and crafted by our skilled operators to perform reliably. That attention to detail and commitment to quality is something that extends throughout the organization at all levels ensuring the best product is shipped to our customers.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I like to spend my time outside of work being active, working out and playing sports. I also like cooking – the creation and chemistry that go into making each dish, but more so, I enjoy eating it. I also enjoy the relaxation of slowing down and just watching TV, playing games or video games. Finally, I love playing guitar and listening to music.
At Mayhew Tools, our people are the true strength behind the steel. It is the human element of our manufacturing process that ensures we deliver uncompromising excellence and quality American-made tools to our customers every single day. Be sure to check back next quarter to meet more of the remarkable individuals behind our success.
